Making Jira Cloud comments internal by default with Forge

Updated 1 min readMarkdown

Atlassian's Forge platform doesn't let an app change the comment editor's default, so how do you make comments private by default? The pattern I used for Loomwise Private Comments:

  • An avi:jira:commented:issue trigger fires on every new comment.
  • If the comment has no visibility set, the app calls the comment update API with the project's configured role/group.
  • Per-project settings live in Forge storage, edited from an admin page; an issue panel shows status.
  • No egress, so it qualifies as "Runs on Atlassian".

Trade-off: there's a short window between posting and restriction, the same as any non-browser-extension approach. Comments that already have a visibility are left alone.

Comments from Jira's native comment box are restricted automatically, usually within a minute.
